Tasmanian Devil
All our devils play their own unique role in the nation-wide Captive Breeding Program (CBP). This is also referred to as the ‘Insurance Population’ which is managed by the Zoological and Aquariums Association (ZAA) in collaboration with Tasmanian Governments ‘Save the Tasmanian Devil Program (STTDP). Currently and historically Trowunna is the most successful place for the breeding of Tasmanian Devils, which is vital to ensure the survival and genetic diversity held within Australian Institutions and the future of the species.
Spotted Tail Quoll
Since the 1980s, Trowunna has been committed to maintaining a genetically robust insurance population of spotted-tail quolls in care. The sanctuary has played an active role in conservation through its ongoing involvement with the Tasmanian Quoll Conservation Program and remains dedicated to promoting education to support the long-term survival of the species. Spotted-tail quolls are carnivorous marsupials and play a vital role as top native predators in the ecosystem. They help regulate prey populations, support biodiversity, and serve as indicators of a healthy, functioning environment. Protecting quolls is essential not only for their survival but also for the health of the broader ecosystem they help sustain.
Eastern Quoll
Eastern Quoll sponsorship funds, aid in contributing to the Tasmanian Quoll Conservation Program. It was officially established in 2010 with primary objectives to maintain genetic diversity within the Australian Institutions, support wild populations of Eastern Quolls in Tasmania and support conservation projects that exist for the species nationally. In early February 2025, Trowunna was involved in the release of Eastern Quolls to Tasmanian Midlands. A total of 24 Eastern Quolls, with 9 from the sanctuary, to support conservation by reintroducing them into a suitable, predator-reduced habitat. The initiative, a partnership led by the University of Tasmania, Tasmanian Land Conservancy and WWF – Australia, aims to bolster declining wild populations, provide critical habitat and gather data to inform future reintroduction of this endangered marsupial.

Sanctuary update!
23/9/2025
Exciting News! This year, the sanctuary is buzzing with new life, with plenty of joey arrivals across our Tasmanian devils, spotted-tail quolls, and eastern quolls. Among them are two Tasmanian devil joeys, Mirren and Mosey, who are currently being hand-raised by our dedicated wildlife team to become incredible ambassadors for their species. Each joey has a special role to play in our conservation efforts—and they all need your support!
Trowunna would like to extend a big thank you all of our sponsors that have helped us to reach these significant achievements. Although these may seem like small things, these milestones will have far reach impacts for the continuation of these species in the wild, and we couldn’t have done it without your help!!
