More than 20 years of practical training
Trowunna has been delivering Dasyurid Captive Management Courses for more than 20 years, sharing the knowledge and experience we've gained through our work with Tasmanian devils and quolls.
The course combines hands-on experience with the theory behind good animal care and management. You'll learn directly from our team and spend time looking at the practical side of working with these species.
We cover day-to-day husbandry, nutrition, handling, health and behaviour, as well as breeding, population management, facilities and enclosure design.
You don't need to already work in the wildlife industry to take part. The course is suitable for people already working with wildlife, those hoping to enter the industry, students, carers and anyone who simply wants to learn more and gain practical experience with Tasmanian devils and quolls.
Our aim is for everyone to leave with a better understanding of these animals, along with practical knowledge and experience they can take into their work, studies or simply build on their own interest in Tasmania's native wildlife.
Who is the course for?
Better knowledge supports better conservation
Working successfully with Tasmanian devils and quolls means understanding more than their basic care. Their behaviour, biology, breeding cycles and individual needs all play a part in how we care for and manage them.
Sharing that knowledge is an important part of conservation. By bringing together practical experience and good husbandry, we can continue to improve the way these species are cared for and managed in captivity.
These courses give us the opportunity to pass on what we've learnt at Trowunna and share that experience with people already working with wildlife, those hoping to join the industry and those who simply want to understand these species better.
Practical skills & knowledge
Throughout the course, we'll work through the key areas involved in the day-to-day care and management of dasyurids, with a mix of practical learning, demonstrations and theory.
Husbandry & Handling
Day-to-day husbandry, nutrition, health monitoring, capture, restraint and safe handling of dasyurids.
Behaviour & Breeding
Dasyurid behaviour, reproduction, breeding management, pairing and population management.
Facilities & Exhibit Design
Enclosure design, enrichment and creating environments that support animal welfare, husbandry and breeding.
Two specialist modules
The course is made up of two three-day modules, held at different times of the year to work around important stages in the animals' natural breeding cycle.
Dasyurid Husbandry for Display
Module 1 focuses on the practical husbandry and management of dasyurids in captivity, with particular attention given to Tasmanian devils. It provides a strong foundation in the everyday care and management of these species.
Advanced Husbandry & Breeding
Module 2 takes a closer look at breeding management, reproductive behaviour, population planning, facility development and exhibit design.
Good to know: The modules can be completed in either order, so you don't need to complete Module 1 before attending Module 2.
Three-day module
$1,300Per participant, per module. Each module is delivered over three days at Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary in Mole Creek, Tasmania.
Course dates
Course dates are planned around the animals and their natural breeding cycles. Dates may move by approximately one week, with final dates confirmed with participants.
